Black Hole Projects (BHP)

Large application system development projects take years to deploy and cost millions. They impact the organization in fundamental ways. Such projects are often called Black Hole Projects (BHP).

In this talk, significant causes of BHPs will be explored:

  • Pre-development scoping and requirements definition;
  • Change management process;
  • Size and complexity of the project;
  • Tools selected for non-BHP projects;
  • Organizational capacity and capability to undertake such projects; and,
  • Project governance.

This is a hands-on session, where participants will use the tools being discussed.  Participants will:

  1. appreciate key differences between large and complex projects against other projects;
  2. understand the need to change (scalability) our frame of mind and methodology; and,
  3. learn about a framework for managing large, complex projects.
